I am very pleased to be asked by the students to provide a few words.
Visual Studies is a unique course, now in its 14th year. It is studio based, interdisciplinary and provides a practical background in creative making, as well as making things happen. The course combines aspects of art, craft and design, as well as performance, music and the use of words. This enables students to explore and develop areas of individual interest, using the most suitable range of media, methods and approaches. It is at the cutting edge of where art meets design meets performance meets words meets the public.
There is therefore a great deal of help available to students to enable them to develop to their full potential, but it is them as individuals who decide on what, how and where.
They have their own work space and access to a very wide range of practical workshop areas, all supervised by technicians. Visual Studies students develop the independence, flexibility, confidence and skills necessary to work with industry, artists and the community, both in the UK and internationally. We believe that, as well as their activities within the School, students should be aware that national and international opportunities exist, and they fully engage with this both during and after their studies.
The students represented here are ample evidence of the success of the course in
assisting people to develop and grow. They have made all decisions related to what you see here.
They have designed, produced and printed everything for the publications produced for VS08. Also, through their ability to work together, they have raised the funds and
sponsorship to be able to do it.
I am sure that you will agree that they are a very able, diverse, interesting group of people. I am also sure that they will all have very positive roles to play in the future, and we wish them all the best.
